Not waving but drowning

These words from the poet Stevie Smith really resonated with me when I first read them years ago in my late teens. It's taken me all this time to understand what meaning and depth is contained within.

I woke this morning and spent a little while in that liminal space between sleeping and awakening, where the place of conscious dreaming exists and inspiration and art are more easily accessible.

I could feel the drowning in the dream. Sinking in to the sea of unconsciousness. The darkness, the water no ground. Then suddenly I was crawling on to the land. Green grass. Solid earth. Light. From the darkness of unconsciousness to the light of awareness. This is where enlightenment is.

Out of the darkness.

We could all, like Stevie Smith, be drowning. Adrift in the dark. Without ground. I know from this morning that there is a landing and it's the sea that took me there. I was carried by the current and the tide . Now there is solid ground, and I find an opportunity ,even an invitation, to explore the landscape. Who knows what mystery I may find when I trust my feet on the path ,have companions on the journey and follow the light to the next field and hill.

By the grace of God there go us all.

Written this Sunday morning from the dreaming.
